How to transfer a .it domain to another registrar
Transferring a domain means changing the provider (registrar) that manages it, not the name itself. Done properly, your website and email stay online throughout.
What you need first
- Access to the control panel of your current registrar (or to whoever manages it for you).
- Authorization code (also called AuthInfo or EPP code): generated by the current registrar, it lets the new one accept the domain.
- A valid owner email: transfer confirmations are sent there.
- An unlocked domain: many registrars keep domains locked against unwanted transfers, so it must be unlocked.
The steps
- Request or generate the authorization code and unlock the domain at your current registrar.
- Start the transfer at the new registrar by entering the domain and the code: with us, begin from Domain Transfer.
- Confirm the emails you receive (owner and, if required, the current registrar).
- Wait for completion: usually a few days. The domain keeps working in the meantime.
Common mistakes
- Changing DNS too early. Do not touch anything until the transfer is complete. If your DNS is hosted elsewhere, it stays as it was.
- An expiring domain. Renew it first: an expired domain, or one in a renewal period, may not be transferable.
- Outdated owner details. With an old email you never see the confirmations and the transfer stalls.
- Forgetting email. If your mailboxes are with the current registrar, decide where they will live before you switch.
Before you choose
Check on the storefront that your extension is supported and read the transfer terms and costs before you start. If your domain is not registered yet, you can search for it here.
